Anonymous sent: I didnt exactly know whether to send you this through an ask or what but in regards to your Romano essay, what is your opinion on the part of these 2 countries having major religious influences and how most of the roman catholic populace, when it comes to homosexuality they regard it as something unnatural since it doesnt lead toward procreation, do you think this might have influenced Romano in a way or another as he grew up to shape his complex personality?
No, I really don’t think the nations care about every thing society clings to, much less something like religion. I had an essay on this on my blog months ago but deleted it (regretting that now), but basically—Nations in themselves are unnatural/supernatural beings and aren’t bound or worried about the limits of what humanity/religion considers “natural”, and they see so many religions come and go, and adjust to social taboos much faster than a human could. Sure, Romano is capable of being influenced by his people, but he’s got his own thoughts and feelings that go beyond what short lived humans can likely relate to, and he doesn’t really speak for all of them, or even most of them. He represents the country, but he embodies centuries of that country to the point where he (or any nation) can’t really be put on a pedestal and used as an accurate representation for the thoughts of an entire nation of people at one point in history. However, I think as children, nations were more likely to believe in religion because they had less life experience or too much hope, but were open to trying things that might incite change or revolution and grew out of it as they got older. (this is basically a really long way of me saying I can’t believe something that lives for centuries would even begin to put faith in religion, and this headcanon is mine without drawing on any canon other than the one that nations don’t seem to care if they’re flirting with a man or a woman. This is based on viewing nations as individuals and not making blanket statements for an entire nation of people bc that’s really hard to dooooo cries)
